You Might be Avoiding Election Coverage If…

As the results start to pour in – or trickle in as the case may be – we at Babes thought you might enjoy a look at some famous elections in Science Fiction. As always, Spoiler warnings to all.

1. Laura Roslin vs. Gaius Baltar, Battlestar Galactica

You knew I had to start here. Laura “I have a steely face like no other” Roslin will always be President Roslin in our memories. Despite her strong moral compass, her love of teachers, and her passion for womens’ rights, we almost lost faith in the President of Bad-Assery when she falsified votes to keep Baltar out of office (Lay Down Your Burdens Pt. 1 and 2). Luckily, Admiral Adama stepped in to point out that losing your convictions was not worth the risk of losing an election – even if that means losing to someone like Gaius Baltar. And then they flirted a little more. Seriously, you two really should have gotten it on a whole lot sooner.

2. Jernau Morat Gurgeh vs. Nicosar, The Player of Games

It may not be your typical election since Gurgeh becomes the new Emperor of Azad by beating his predecessor at a highly complex game of skill and political maneuvering. Hey, wait. That does sound very much like an election. Still, it is Gurgeh’s deep-rooted sense of where he came from – The Culture – that ultimately leads to his victory over the cruel Azad political establishment. It probably doesn’t hurt that he was the unknowing pawn of his own government that essentially staged a peaceful coup from the inside of the government. The Emperor of Azad is a position with term limits though, so In 6 more years The Culture may have simply faced one more tournament. It really makes you wonder about the origin of The Hunger Games.

3. Zaphod Beeblebrox vs. …No one, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Yeah, okay, I stretched a little on this one. Technically it isn’t so much an election with Zaphod Beeblebrox as it is an appointment to the position of President of the Universe. But, if we’re really being honest, no one would object to having Zaphod Beeblebrox as President for one brief moment; If only because he might make everyone a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster so that we can forget about all this stressful election business for the night.

Halloween Pictures

So much beauty and nerdiness below.

Rachel went as Amelia Earhart- I think I am the only person to have just realized that her last name sounds like “air heart” and that a more fitting homophone last name has never been. Rachel nailed it, per usual, and even won some money and some hearts at her Halloween in Silverlake.

Nissa went as Fionna, did some super awesome trick or treating, and generally had a mathematical Halloween. How good are her socks and hat? Too good. Your Halloween game is en pointe, Nissa.

I went as Daenarys “Where are my dragons?” Targaryen. And I think I did good. Got a few “Hey, Khaleesi”s and they did my Hallowego good. My papier mache Drogon (I know, I chose to reverse the accent and main colors for effect) was the highlight of my costume, though I could not, for the life of me get that thing to just sit on my shoulder. But that’s Dany’s problem too, I suppose.

Hope you had a great Halloween, babes! We did. Welcome to November and new adventures.
