I’ve been musing a lot on the relationship between genre and the sea lately, not that it’s a very new thing for me. One of my favorite books is The Scar by China Mieville, and there is a very long tradition of scifi/fantasy at sea, from The Little Mermaid to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to Jaws*. To paraphrase an ancient mariner in our oceans there be monsters, and for the lady adventurer it remains a mostly unexplored and exciting realm. However, even when SciFi goes interstellar, we see nautical language and themes, with Star Trek being the leading example. Star Fleet is the navy, clearly.
So, if you are dreaming of the sea like I am, maybe you should pick up some nautical adornments for your own lady nerd haven. You are the mistress of your fate, you are the captain of your Nautilus.
* Really all the works of Peter Benchley are underrated at this point, right?
